New Bern Real Estate

New Bern is a fast growing, vibrant community of 23,128 with a small town feel. Water activities abound, as we are on the Neuse and Trent Rivers, just 40 miles from Atlantic Beach. Being the 2nd oldest town in North Carolina and former state capital, New Bern also has a rich history. It was settled by Baron Christopher von Graffenreid, a Swiss colonist, in 1710 and the town was named for the city of Bern, Switzerland. Royal Governor William Tryon named New Bern the capital of the Carolina colony and after the revolution it became the state capital. The original Tryon Palace was completed in 1770.

The 1800s saw New Bern becoming a major port and center of trade. During the Civil War, the Union Army captured and occupied New Bern. The occupation meant that the Confederate Army needed to keep troups nearby to protect the railroad supply lines heading north. It also meant that most of New Bern was left intact. The early 1900s saw lumber, turpentine and pitch become important products of the area. The non-profit Swiss Bear Downtown Development Corporation was established in 1979 to revitalize and restore the downtown and waterfront areas.

The National Register of Historic Places currently includes 36 inidual listings and 150 sites in New Bern. In the mid-1980s, Weyerhauser began its first local development and the building boom began. Today, the combination of historic home tours, festivals and a Christmas Flotilla bring thousands of tourists to New Bern each year. The historic setting, abundant water and golf activities, along with the traffic free quaintness of a small city makes New Bern a very attractive destination for retirees.

Haverlock Real Estate

Havelock is a city of 22,442 and is also the home of the Marine Corp Air Station, Cherry Point, the largest Marine Air Station on the east coast. The town was named for Sir Henry Havelock, a British Officer in India who distinguished himself during the Indian Mutiny in 1857. Havelock was the point of initial landing by General Ambrose Burnsides army prior to the battle of New Bern. During the late 1800s and early 1900s tar and turpentine were important products of the area. The invention of the steam engine eventually led to the decline of wooden boats and with that went the demand for these products. Cherry Point was opened in 1940 and remains today as the leading provider of employment. Cherry Point is considered one of the best all weather air bases in the world and serves as a back up landing site for the space shuttle. October in Havelock means Chilli Festival and a competition of the areas best recipes. Havelock sits at a major turn in the Neuse River, the result being some great white sand beach properties to the east of town.

Year Around Outdoor Activities

Our weather is very conducive to year around golf at all of the 6 championship courses in the immediate area.

The Neuse and Trent Rivers, along with their many tributaries, provide a playground for an abundance of water activities and waterfront properties. Area residents may enjoy boating, fishing, sailing, canoing and kayaking or hiking through the Croatan National Forest. The Atlantic Ocean is just 35 miles away.
