Oriental
Oriental
is the largest city in Pamlico County and sits on the Neuse River at the mouth of Smith Creek. It has a population of 875 people and is known as the sailing capital of North Carolina. It was settled by American Indians and became the haunt of pirates in the early days of European settlement. Edward (Blackbeard) Teach made his home in nearby Bath and was known to frequent the area.
In the later 1800s it was known as Smith's Creek and was renamed Oriental after a name plate of a sunken ship was found washed up on a local beach. Oriental was incorporated in 1899. In the early 1900s, lumber, fishing and farming were the mainstays of the Oriental economy. Today, tourism,
real estate
, farming and marine businesses drive the economy. New upscale
real estate developments
are appearing in and around Oriental.
In the 1960s just a little more than a handful of boats called Oriental home. Today there are more than 2000 docking in the immediate area. Both the performing and fine arts have a strong presence in the community. The community event calendar is complete with festivals, cook offs, plays, regattas and a tarpon tournament.
